What is forest mat?

Piiraisen Forest mat® is forest floor with mainly blueberry and lingonberry bushes, typically with heather, crowberries, mosses and occasionally a bit of lichen. It is suitable for a wide range of growing environments and quickly adapts to the site’s natural vegetation.

Forest mat is taken from forests that are to be felled. Eight square metres (2 × 4 m) of mat, approximately 10 cm thick, are rolled and delivered directly from the forest to the yard. If necessary, we can cut the roll into smaller sections on-site. However, we recommend that forest mat is installed in the largest possible sizes so that there are fewer seams and the root system remains uniform, reducing the need for watering.

Groundwork

The best type of ground on which to lay forest mat should consist of sandy/light moraine or fine sand, as this will bind moisture to the forest mat and is low in nutrients, preventing weed growth. If the subsoil contains nutrient-rich soil or mature vegetation, it can be changed to suit forest mat, for example using fabric and sand. We will provide detailed instructions on preparing the site and, if necessary, will be more than happy to do it for you.

Laying

Forest mat is installed by placing the pieces tightly against each other and the subsoil. For self-installers, we can cut the roll into smaller pieces on-site. However, we recommend that it is installed in the largest possible pieces to reduce the number of seams. This will also keep the root system uniform, improving the start of growth and reducing the need for watering.

Care

Forest mat should be watered during the first summer, especially in the weeks after installation and on sunny days. Easy and effective watering is ensured by using a handy sprinkler. After watering, the root/peat layer of the forest mat should be thoroughly wet all the way down to the bottom. During the rainy season, care is provided by nature. When installed in the autumn, the forest mat must be maintained throughout the following spring and summer. Otherwise, forest mat is practically maintenance-free and does not need any renovation. You can enjoy your garden, picking blueberries and lingonberries at best in the same autumn after installation.

Frequently asked questions

What is forest mat?

Piiraisen Forest mat® is forest floor with mainly blueberry and lingonberry bushes, typically with heather, crowberries, mosses and occasionally a bit of lichen.

Forest mat is suitable for a wide range of habitats and quickly adapts to the site’s natural vegetation. It is most commonly laid in the yards of various types of private houses, cottage yards, public areas (parks, roadsides, kindergarten yards) and many other locations.

Forest mat can be laid from spring to autumn, usually from May to early November. The length of the season varies from year to year, depending on the melting and arrival of snow. As a rule of thumb, the ground should be free of snow and melted.

The success of installing forest mat starts with well-done groundwork. After that, you can lay it yourself or let our professional staff do the job for you. For the first year, the forest mat will need to be watered, but after that, it is often maintenance-free, depending on the location.

Forest mat is harvested from forests that are to be felled. Before the area is logged, we take a few pieces here and there. Eight square metres (2 × 4 m) of forest mat, about 10 cm thick, is rolled and delivered directly from the forest to the yard.

Ideally, you can get your own berries from the garden as early as in the first growing season. Blueberry and lingonberry bushes are the most common in forest mat.
